14 YouTube Alternatives to Host Videos in 2024

YouTube Alternatives

In this article, we have rounded up experts’ in-depth reviews on the 14 best YouTube alternatives. It will help you choose the right video streaming and hosting platform as per your specific needs. Let’s get started!

Over the course of years, YouTube has been and still is dominating the video industry. Having the most users second to Google, and Facebook in a day it would be hard to believe that this site even has an alternative.

But that’s still not to say that the tech giant may come apart someday, and when that day comes people will be wishfully thinking that they already started posting on other alternatives like YouTube. Personally other than YouTube, I like to post my content on both Vimeo & Dailymotion, these are great alternatives that also have the potential to dominate the video industry, though the traffic influx on these sites may not be greater than YouTube, but the plus side to that is there is a lack of competition on these platforms.

Meaning that your video would start trending soon, and since they too have a monetization option available, you can also rack up a pretty decent amount of money along the way too.

Here Are 14 Best Alternatives to YouTube in 2024:

1. Vimeo

Vimeo is one of the best YouTube alternatives in 2020. We currently create online courses teaching people to build long term, sustainable online businesses. Our preferred Video hosting platform is Vimeo and here’s why.

Vimeo offers a number of features that blow YouTube out of the water in terms of premium video production. They offer fast, stable streaming with minimal downtime as well as a wide range of editing and customization features. Things like the ability to add chapters into the video (in a much cleaner way than simply adding timestamps like YouTube) and the ability to collaborate and leave feedback to video editors make it a powerful all-in-one solution for course creators like myself.

Vimeo also has a ton of integration options which I see many competitors missing. Being able to connect it directly to platforms like Rev (a transcription service) is a huge bonus and makes our entire production workflow so much better.

For these reasons, I would strongly recommend Vimeo as one of the best YouTube alternatives!

Mark Webster, Co-Founder of Authority Hacker

Also, Joseph of Fire Stick Hacks adds “Vimeo is a popular alternative to YouTube and it has more than 90 million creators. While it doesn’t receive nearly the same amount of traffic, it is listed within the top 200 sites (typically around 170) on Alexa’s global rankings list. Its popularity is part of the reason why it’s able to compete with YouTube. Like the more dominant platform, Vimeo allows anyone to take advantage of its built-in audience by uploading original content.”

Best features of Vimeo:

  1. Better Quality Videos: This site is much more flexible than other platforms from a technical perspective. It accepts most codecs, framerates, bit rates, resolutions, and color settings while also offering a guide you can use to better prepare your video for the platform’s, however lax, built-in compression settings. The outcome is videos that look sharper and more detailed than other platforms, most notably YouTube.
  2. Ad-Free Platform: Vimeo does not show ads on its site or in your videos, which is why it offers the pricing plans mentioned below.
  3. Embeddable Video Player: Embed your videos on your website, and allow users to change quality and volume settings.

Who should use Vimeo

Vimeo has five plans, making it suitable for all creators. Allplans offer unlimited bandwidth and embeddable videos. If you simply want toadd a few videos to your website, use the free Vimeo Basic plan.

If you need more than 250GB of storage per year, want to upload in 4K or HDR, and wish to have access to more stats and customizations, upgrade to a paid plan. Pricing starts at $12/month or $84/year (a 40% discount) and maxes out at $900/year.

2. Twitch

Twitch is a real alternative to YouTube in a number of ways. Not only are the younger generations watching more live content, Twitch’s main draw, but also really investing and latching on to the bigger personalities. While some might consider Twitch as a solely live platform, the fact that these broadcasts are instantly saved and can be watched at your leisure is basically mimicking YouTube VODs. Moreover, with clips, emotes, and more, viewers are able to have up to the minute interaction and a sense of community that a static VOD or even on YouTube’s live alternative just doesn’t possess.

Some also might say that Twitch is a gaming-specific platform but they’d be wrong with some of the top channels being in the “Just Chatting” category, essentially being live Vlogs that you’d see on YouTube anyway. If all of this isn’t enough, with Amazon backing them, there’s little stopping Twitch becoming not only the place to go for live content but also VODs, highlights, and Vlogs in the very near future.

3. Uscreen

Uscreen is a software platform that allows video creators to host, monetize, and distribute video content. In contrast to YouTube, Uscreen offers a whole suite of tools that help video creators manage their businesses. This includes the ability to build a website, sell video content subscriptions, process payments and create OTT applications for platforms like iOS, Apple TV, Fire TV. In addition, the company recently added the ability to live stream videos using its platform. These features make Uscreen a preferred option for serious video creators that expect to earn their livelihood from their work.

In terms of pricing, Uscreen subscriptions start at $149 per month for 3,000 minutes of video hosting and 300 subscribers. This subscription pricing, which differs from YouTube’s revenue share model, means that video creators will keep a greater percentage of their sales as their business grows. Uscreen’s pricing is comparable to alternatives such as DaCast, Muvi, and Vimeo.

4. Metacafe

In 2020, my chosen YouTube alternative video platform is Metacafe, based in San Francisco.  Although the video arm of Metacafe has only been around since 2012, it has an average of two million visitors a month, making it one of the largest platforms in the world.

I use Metacafe for a number of reasons, including:

  • The platform sorts videos into different categories, meaning I have a better chance of reaching my audience.
  • The platform is set up to ensure that only high-quality videos are available on the platform.
  • Metacafe works hard to ensure that no duplicate videos turn up on the platform.

As well as the above, Metacafe has a really cool reward system whereby you can receive up to $5 for every 1000 visits.  Although you have to have 20,000 views or more to take advantage of this, it can be a nice little earner if you tend to have quite a bit of viewing traffic for your videos.

Finally, Metacafe is super easy and quick to use which, in my business, is incredibly important.  As with YouTube, this platform has.

6. Odeum

Odeum is a great alternative for YouTube because it is an all-in-one platform to publish and distribute videos through a set of custom branded apps designed to deliver natively to all device formats including mobile, tablet, web, and TV. This subscription video platform allows creators to completely brand their content and appearance of their sites and apps to deliver the content wherever the subscribers want it. Users are able to control their own revenue models and manage their videos and subscribers.

The YouTube alternative Odeum helps yoga instructors, fitness trainers, meditation guides, educators, and more elevate their business with premium subscription video services. Businesses can work on branding, marketing, revenue control, and publishing of video services all in a single place. Odeum’s integration includes custom branded apps on every major platform, adaptive streaming, and built-in tech support for iOS, Android, Apple TV, Android TV, Amazon Fire, Fire TV, Roku, Chromecast, and browsers.

7. Wistia

The best YouTube alternative for hosting videos is Wistia. Why? Because Wistia lets you turn a passive video marketing strategy (people watching your videos and maybe liking and subscribing) into an active promoter and grower of your brand. When you embed a Wistia-hosted video you have plenty of options to work with so you benefit the most.

For example, you can have clickable social sharing buttons within the video so people can amplify it easily; you can have a CTA that send people to a landing page of your choice. And probably the most useful feature of them all, you can lock a part of the video, and to unlock it, users have to submit their email address. So, videos hosted on Wistia can help you grow your email list faster.

8. Mux

If you’re a developer and looking for a serious place to host your videos but don’t want to set up AWS, Mux is a great option. It’s a developer first, has extensive APIs, advanced analytics, and is pay-per-use making it the perfect option for hosting videos or live streams. I use Mux when I need a white label low-cost solution for hosting videos and live streams.

9. DTube

DTube, in my opinion, isn’t just an alternative to YouTube, it’s better. Unlike YouTube, DTube stores video’s in a blockchain (kind of like bitcoin) meaning that videos are not stored on one centralized server. This means that it is close to impossible for hackers to steal your video content and your personal details. At the moment DTube does not push adverts every few minutes like YouTube has been doing now for some time. The interface of DTube is overall very similar to that of YouTube, so even people like myself who used YouTube for years can easily make the move!

10. TikTok

One of the best YouTube alternatives is the TikTok. Its a big help to entertain people while staying at home because it is fun to use. As one of the users, it allows me to create and share videos on broad choices. This app is applicable to all ages and a great help to people who are stuck and bored during this quarantine. The challenges in dance and funny videos of Tiktok helps people to stay happy and positive despite the current situation. With the Tiktok fun and entertaining app, this made it more popular. It is one way to help people feel a sense of connectivity and engaging in these uneasy times and in promoting good health.

11. IGTV

IGTV is the best YouTube alternative — Although I believe YouTube is the best video streaming app and there are not many apps that come even close, but if you’re looking for alternatives with quality content and viewership IGTV is the way to go. IGTV is a game-changer for brands and content creators to get the most out of their video content. It has an excellent engagement rate, and you can add a call-to-action too.

12. Facebook Watch

Facebook Watch has become a strong viable alternative to YouTube. It serves the same function of putting content it deems relevant in front of its audience. Much like YouTube, the algorithms used to determine relevance lead to suggestions of content that draw on user preferences. Facebook of course has a rich source of data to draw on, namely user interactions on the platform. Facebook Watch also has many of the same functions as YouTube.

There’s of course a strong live streaming component as well as custom watch lists based on the groups and content a user has followed on Facebook. Users can also save favorite videos to their profiles. Since this is an app integrated into Facebook, sharing content is a simple and straightforward process, allowing video content to rapidly become viral. This presents a lot of opportunities for businesses to create and market content specifically for their Facebook audiences

Nikola Baldikov, Digital Marketing Manager at Brosix

13. Dailymotion

My recommendation as an alternative to YouTube is Dailymotion. It’s smaller that YouTube, but has a number of differences. Dailymotion has about 112 million visitors each month compared to over 1 billion on YouTube, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Dailymotion’s visitors are much more loyal and targeted so you can gain a highly targeted audience.

There is a 60-minute time limit on video uploaded to Dailymotion that might turn off some users, but if your content is shorter, this won’t even affect you.

Dailymotion shines in its video quality. Video files uploaded to the platform aren’t as compressed as they are on YouTube. As such, viewers get a better viewing experience.

14. Kapwing

Kapwing is an online editing and hosting platform. Users can upload images, videos, or GIFs to Kapwing and embed the video on their website directly by copying the video source URL or through an embedded iframe.

Unlike YouTube, Kapwing’s creators can upload videos without needing to sign in. If you create a Kapwing Account, you can make edits “in place” to embedded videos, meaning you can append new video clips, change timing or text elements, or add stickers and annotations after embedding the video without needing to update the embed code.

Kapwing supports the most popular video file formats including MP4, MOV, FLV, AVI, and more. Creators can also choose to import videos from a URL if they’re already in Dropbox, YouTube, or Google Drive rather than needing to download and re-upload a large file. Because Kapwing is also a sophisticated online video editor, publishers and bloggers can use Kapwing to consolidate their editing and hosting workflow.

It’s free for videos up to 7 minutes long, and there’s no watermark if you sign in to a Kapwing Account. The Kapwing Pro plan (which unlocks infinite storage, longer videos, and re-editing) costs $20/month.

Julia Enthoven, Founder and CEO at Kapwing

Conclusion

These are the top 14 alternatives to YouTube in 2020 that you don’t want to miss. Each of them has unique features that you might want for your upcoming videos.
